USDC from Ethereum to Arbitrum
Arbitrum is Ethereum with the fees cut and the security kept. That is why balances drift onto it. The catch nobody mentions until they hit it: coming back through Arbitrum’s own bridge means a challenge period measured in days. This route does not use that bridge.

A rollup’s withdrawal bridge holds funds while its fraud window runs, around a week on Arbitrum. That is a property of the bridge, not of the money. The wallet quotes an arrival estimate for the route it actually takes, and it is measured in seconds.
Cheaper, still denominated in ETH
Arbitrum charges gas in ETH, not in a token of its own. A wallet holding only USDC on Arbitrum is therefore stuck in exactly the way it would be on Ethereum, just less expensively, unless the fee comes out of the operation, which here it does.
Why USDC and not USDT here
Both live on Arbitrum, but Arbitrum’s USDT is the LayerZero edition, which trades under the ticker USDT0. The wallet folds it into plain USDT so balances and prices agree everywhere; if you are moving Tether rather than Circle’s dollar, expect that name and do not treat it as a different asset.
Native, not wrapped
Circle issues USDC on Arbitrum directly rather than leaving it to a bridge, which is why you rarely see the wrapped-token warnings that follow other assets between chains. It is the same issuer redeeming the same dollar, on a different ledger, a distinction worth knowing when someone tells you all cross-chain dollars carry bridge risk.
Where this balance is useful
Arbitrum carries the deepest activity of any Ethereum rollup, so a working balance there can be spent without a second hop for most things people do on-chain. That is the practical argument for keeping dollars on it rather than on Ethereum: same reach, a fraction of the cost per action.

Does moving to Arbitrum lock my funds for a week?
No. The multi-day wait belongs to the rollup’s own withdrawal bridge. This route does not use it.
Do I need ETH on Arbitrum?
No. Gas there is denominated in ETH, and that cost is settled inside the operation.
Is USDC on Arbitrum the same as on Ethereum?
The same dollar, a separate credit. Moving between them is a real transfer.
